Mid-Term seminar
As the European Union transitions towards climate-neutrality by 2050, innovative solutions, systems and practices will be needed within the agricultural sector to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance carbon removals. On 1st December, the ERA-NETs FACCE ERA-GAS, ICT AGRI-FOOD and ERA-NET SUSAN organised a seminar to discuss innovative approaches being developed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in livestock and mixed crop-livestock systems.
Eight projects funded in 2018 to address the topic of ‘Novel technologies, solutions and systems to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of animal production systems’ presented their mid-term results as well as what is in the pipeline for the rest of the project and the expected impact for farming, policy and regulation. Topics discussed include seaweed additives to livestock feed, applying a regional approach to greenhouse gas mitigation and precision livestock technologies.

The 9 projects funded in the 2021 Joint Call to explore ‘Circularity in mixed crop and livestock farming systems, with emphasis on greenhouse gas mitigation’ presented their plans for the future. Topics that are to be explored include reduction of emissions through crop, livestock and agroforestry interactions, creating LCA inventories for circularity assessments and the use of participatory co-innovation to assess nutrient circularity.
